Garden

From the Winslow Cohousing community garden

The half-acre, organic community garden has a permaculture design, emphasizing natural, self-sustaining growing practices. We do not use pesticides and have a large onsite composting receptacle for all food waste. We grow much of the produce used in our community meals. We also have smaller plots available for personal gardening use.

In the garden, we grow a wide range of ever-changing offerings from berries, figs, and apples to vegetables and herbs of many varieties. The community holds frequent work parties to ensure the health and abundance of the garden.

The orchard portion of the garden has around a dozen established apple trees including Liberty, Jonagold, Akane, Melrose, and Gravenstein varieties. Each fall these trees burst with apples, a testament to our rich organic soil and luxuriously rainy winters. On occasion, apples are pressed into community-shared cider and any fruit that cannot be used is donated to local pig farmers.

The garden also has ample space for relaxing in the sun. While a shared community space, we recognize the need for quiet solitude and individual reflection in this lovely area. Chairs are also near the chicken coop in order to enjoy the silliness and joy of the hens! (They love eating fresh kale from your hand!)
